“He is jealous for me. Love’s like a hurricane; I am a tree, bending beneath the weight of his wind and mercy.” -John Mark McMillan
Most of us know this song. I know at my church we’ve probably sung it a dozen times. It’s a song with beautiful lyrics and amazing imagery.
But how often do we sing those first few lines with no real heart connect, our hearts hardened by sin and unbelief. He really is jealous for you, and that doesn’t just mean he likes you a lot. He BURNS for you. His eyes are a flame of fire, burning with love for us. That love is so intense and so real that it hurts him when we place other things before him. He longs for us in such a real way that his heart aches when we allow lesser pleasures to occupy our time. He’s fighting for us, every second of every day. Fighting off all the distractions and everything else trying to steal our affections and exalt themselves as god in our lives.
We need to let go of our inhibitions. Lay down our defenses. Open up and let God’s love truly overwhelm us to the point where all we want is Him.
He’s a jealous God. He will not settle for a fraction of your heart, one area of your life. He wants ALL. And he’s worthy.
Let the hurricane move you.
Bend beneath the weight.
Surrender.
“Do not worship any other god, for the Lord, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God.” Exodus 34:14
“Place me like a seal over your heart, like a seal on your arm; for love is as strong as death, it’s jealousy unyielding than the grave.
It burns like a blazing fire, like a might flame. Many waters cannot quench love, rivers cannot wash it away.” Song of Songs 7:5
